Howard Mahan Hall
UUFM was incorporated in 1958, fifty years ago this year. A handful of forward looking individuals banded together to create The Unitarian Fellowship of Mobile, later to be changed to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Mobile, aka: UUFM. One of those individuals was Howard Mahan, a History Professor at the newly established University of South Alabama.
Howard Mahan is still a member of UUFM, and still attends almost every Sunday Service! Howard has supported UUFM with his knowledge, his energy, and with his financial commitments for fifty years. He is the very essence of UUFM. The heart and soul of our Fellowship.
As we now have a Master Plan for our new facility in hand, it was felt this new larger hall should be named after Howard Mahan, PHD. The Fellowship has wholeheartedly agreed to this new name.
Howard Mahan Hall will be sixty two feet in diameter, and round. Our Architect for the UUFM Master Plan was Don Bowden. Our committee interviewed and talked to a fairly large number of engineering and architectural companies. These were then narrowed down to four candidates, and the entire committee then sat down with these four company representatives. After they were all interviewed, all six of the committee members were in total agreement of who they wanted to follow on this project, Don Bowden. The other three were very professional, and brought information on there current and past projects. However, Don Bowden went far beyond just that. He conducted a lot of research on his own to find out just who UU's are, and what they believe. He came in and literally wowed every one of us. We knew we could easily work with him. The icing on the cake turned out to be how Green Conscience Don Bowden already is. We felt a connection to Don all through the process of developing a Mahan Hall Master Plan.
This Master Plan gives us direction in so many ways for the next Twenty Five Years into our future. It provides us with comfort and stability as we continue to grow.
